Music Appreciation with the Buford Highway Youth Orchestra

On Saturday, February 3, the conductor of the Buford Highway Youth Orchestra, Mrs. Juana Algaza, met with our 6th grade scholars to discuss music appreciation and to give a demonstration of string instruments. Our scholars not only learned about cellos and violins, but also about opportunities to expand their musical talents with the orchestra. Reach for Excellence works to provide enrichment opportunities for our scholars both in and out of the classroom so that they are prepared for the rigor, culture, and environment of elite college prep high school programs. Music appreciation is one way to help our students excel and feel prepared for the next step on their educational journey.

The Buford Highway Youth Orchestra mission is to connect music to the educational and social needs of Buford Highway’s Youth. Two current Reach for Excellence scholars, Emily Ramirez and David Buendia, are part of this prestigious group. Mrs. Algaza shared information about this program and the application process with our students and families.
