It’s Rocket Science!

How exciting would it be to launch a rocket that you built! That is exactly what students were able to do during Rocket Launch Day, the culmination of the rising 8th grade scholars’ science unit on rocketry.

During this unit, students first learned about the differences between aerodynamic movement and ballistic movement as well as the chemistry of rocket engines. The discussion linked to concepts that students were learning in mathematics like parabolas. In addition, students watched the launch of SpaceX Starship, and compared it to the planned flight of their own rockets. Each student built their own rocket, loaded it with fuel, and created an ignition starter. Students counted down to launch, then watched their rockets soar across the athletic fields!
