Chanel Tobias, Cohort 2010 H

How did you hear about Reach for Excellence and what inspired you to join the program?

My mother heard about RFE from a coworker. She applied because she thought RFE was a good educational opportunity and wanted to surround me with other gifted students.

Tell me a little about your family growing up…

My family relocated from Buffalo, New York, to Atlanta, Georgia when I was four years old. I grew up in a single parent household with my mom and brother. I had a great childhood, and in between all the fun, my mother showed me anything is possible if you’re willing to work for it- I watched her graduate college, buy her first house, and grow into a successful career woman.

Could you share some of your favorite memories from Reach?

I was the Cohort H Vice President, alongside Kayla Hill (President) and Jasmin Frasier (Treasurer). I have a photo of all three of us at graduation. It was a proud moment because we all became great friends and completed all three years together.

What did you learn in RFE that has stayed with you?

Keep an open mind to all of life’s experiences. And in order to be successful, you have to do more than others are willing to do.

Tell us about your journey after Reach for Excellence…

After RFE, I attended Tucker High School and graduated in 2014. I continued my education at the Robinson College of Business at Georgia State University, where I earned a B.B.A. in Business Economics. During my tenure, I achieved my Georgia real estate salesperson license and interned with two commercial real estate firms before graduating in 2019. I now work as an Investment Sales Analyst with Stan Johnson Company, a commercial real estate brokerage that specializes in net lease investment sales.

What advice do you have for Reach students currently in the program?

Maintain the relationships you create with your fellow classmates at RFE, they will last the longest and become the most meaningful. (I am still good friends with three program graduates!)

What are your long term career goals?

Long term, I want to become a commercial real estate broker and become an expert in my career field. I am also interested in personal real estate investment and would like to build my own real estate portfolio.

If you could speak to a donor right now, what would you want to say or want them to know about supporting Reach for Excellence?

Reach for Excellence is wonderful program that has made a long-term impact in the trajectory of my life, both personal and professional. The additional education hours made my test scores better. My testing abilities helped me when it was time to take the SAT and apply for college- I had my choice of multiple schools and scholarships. The friends I made in this program have stood the test of time. Most importantly, RFE is program that exposes young students to opportunities they may not have thought possible. You cannot dream for what you don’t know exists.
